Side Effects
Modalert increases levels of histamine and norepinephrine in the brain, two neurotransmitters involved in regulating the sleep-wake cycle and promoting wakefulness. It also influences gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) transmission, although this is less well understood.
This medication is prescribed to improve alertness and functioning in people who have shift work sleep disorder (SWSD) or excessive sleepiness associated with narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea/sleep apnea syndrome (OSA), or narcolepsy with cataplexy. It is sometimes given with psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or interpersonal therapy, to enhance its effectiveness.

Precautions
